ALDIN WRITES NBA IKEJA ON ACCESSIBILITY OF THE BAR CENTRE TO PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

5th June, 2020

The Chairman/Exco
Nigerian Bar Association (NBA),
Ikeja Branch,
The Bar Centre,
High Court Premises, Ikeja.

Dear Sirs/Madam,

ON ACCESSIBILITY OF THE BAR CENTRE TO PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

The above-named association wish to heartily commend and congratulate you on the on-going construction work on the NBA, Ikeja Bar Centre. May the Lord almighty grant you all the grace to successfully complete the good work.

It would be recalled that at the monthly meeting of October, 2019, our dear Chairman gave the assurance that the said Bar Centre would be built to be accessible to persons with disabilities. We are optimistic that, in keeping with the said assurance, the Bar Centre, all the apartments therein and appurtenances will be made accessible to persons with disabilities.

This will be bringing the NBA, Ikeja Branch, in compliance with the extant laws in that regard.

It is germane to draw your attention to some salient provisions of the relevant extant laws.

Lagos State Special People’s Law

Section 20(1):
At parking lots, one out of twenty parking lots shall be properly marked and reserved for persons living with disability.

   Section 24(1):

A person living with disability shall have the right and necessary facilities to access public building and public places.

(2) No public building shall be constructed without the necessary accessibility aids such as lift (where necessary), ramps and others that shall make them accessible and usable to persons living with disability.

  1. Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Law, 2018.

Section 3:
A person living with disability has the right to access the physical environment and buildings on an equall bases with others.
Section 4:
No public building shall be constructed without the necessary accessibility aids such as lift (where necessary), ramps and others that shall make them accessible and usable to persons living with disability.
It may interest you to know that there are a number of members of the Ikeja Bar, who are persons with disabilities. Nothing could be more unjust and discriminatory than such members paying their dues and fulfiling other obligations to the bar, and the same Bar turns around to build a Bar Centre that they cannot access.
We are confident that this Exco shall do what is just and non-discriminatory in the circumstance. On our part, we shall be glad to freely assist the Exco, whenever called upon, in achieving this objective.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully
For: ALDIN
